St Davids Bishop's Palace

St Davids Bishop's PalaceThis imposing palace lies within the defended perimeter of the St Davids Cathedral precincts. The surviving buildings date chiefly from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, particularly the work of Bishop Thomas Bek (1280-93) and Bishop Henry de Gower (1328-47). It is de Gower's celebrated arcaded parapet which is one of the glories of the site. Even in ruin, the palace displays magnificent architectural splendour and is testimony to the efforts of a succession of 'builder-bishops' who held the see in the later 13th and 14th centuries, before the Reformation ushered in an era of decay and destruction in the 16th and 17th centuries.
